Description

The research you do today or in the future, potentially has the power to change people’s lives – but only if they know about it and understand how it applies to them.

The mass media is one of the most powerful tools through which you can share the results of your work. It can increase your profile, build your credibility and help you attract funding – but how can you get the press to share your story?

Understanding what the media looks for in a story, how to develop messages that are interesting and relatable, and the best ways of pitching to the media, are all valuable tools that can help you get your findings out into the world.

Join experienced communications consultant and trainer Kristen Connell for a series of workshops that will give you the skills to get your story published. With Kristen’s help, you will write and submit an article for publication.

This workshop is part of a 3-session series.

In Part 1 (4 July), you will learn:

  • what type of material, language and ‘hooks’ are attractive to the mainstream press
  • how to turn a research scenario into an opinion piece and media release
  • how to submit an article, identify a target audience and choose the most appropriate outlet.

Participants will prepare an opinion piece or media statement on their own research prior to the next workshop.

In Part 2 (20 July), you will:

  • work with other participants and the presenter to refine your opinion piece or media statement
  • discuss your chosen media outlet, why you picked it and how you plan to make contact
  • prepare to submit your work to an outlet.

In Part 3 (9 August), you will:

  • regroup with other participants and reflect on outcomes
  • discuss what's in progress, what got published, what didn’t and why
  • decide on your next steps.

Who is this workshop series for?

Any researcher or research student who wants to publish their research in the mainstream media.
